Discussion and resources regarding Fabian Socialism
|
|
Fabian Socialism's purpose is to advance the principles of socialism via gradualist and reformist means. The
Fabian Society was founded in January 1884.
Fabian Socialists Gone Wild, Part 1 - "Its purpose is to accomplish a social democracy to transform societies and
governments not through revolution but gradually." [Thus A Wolf In Sheeps Clothing is their logo as seen above.]
The fabian window at the Beatrice Webb house [Shown above], commissioned by George Bernard Shaw in 1910 and executed by Caroline Townshend. The Fabian window shows the Fabians intent to
change the world and remould it nearer to the hearts desire. The fabians heart desire was to see the whole world governed by a socialist dictatorship. The window contains such well known
members of the Fabian Society as author H.G. Wells and playwright George Bernhard Shaw.
The Progressives/Progressivism and Progressive Era are closely related to
Fabian Socialism. The UK Labour Party(roots in the Fabian Society) now calls itself
Progressive.
"The Fabians were opposed to the revolutionary theory of Marxism, holding that social reforms and socialistic "permeation" of existing political institutions would bring about
the natural development of socialism." (The Columbia Encyclopedia). The
Fabian Essays are very revealing.
"..., advocates of social reconstruction have learned the lesson of Democracy, and know that it is through the slow and gradual turning of the popular mind to new principles that social
reorganization bit by bit comes." (Fabian Essays)
